Webber International University’s OTA Program Earns 7-Year ACOTE Accreditation
BABSON PARK, Fla. (July 8, 2025) — In a significant milestone for healthcare education, Webber International University’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program, which was established in 2019, has earned a seven-year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). This makes it Florida’s first accredited Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant (BSOTA) program and one of six nationwide with this distinction.
Webber’s OTA program stands out for its unique curriculum, which combines the OTA degree with a minor in Health Services Administration, equipping graduates for both clinical and leadership roles in healthcare. Students can enter the program in either the fall or spring cohort following completion of prerequisite coursework.
After a rigorous onsite review earlier this year, ACOTE commended the program’s strong emphasis on community engagement, highlighting its impact on students’ development of essential fieldwork and interpersonal skills.
Dr. Anita Abuathareh, OTD, MS, OTR/L, and Program Director, noted, “This accreditation validates our hard work and vision, reaffirming our commitment to graduating OTAs who are clinically skilled and leadership ready. It’s rewarding to see our students thrive, and our faculty’s dedication is recognized nationally.”
Academic Dean Dr. Murray, DrPH, MPH, MSW, said, “This milestone reflects our community’s dedication to building an excellent program.” Associate Dean Shannon Ryals noted, “We’re proud to be Florida’s first accredited BSOTA program and the only one nationally with a Health Services Administration minor.”
With occupational therapy jobs projected to grow 27% by 2029 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), Campus President Dr. Ken Reaves stated, “As community needs grow, OTAs play an increasingly vital role in helping others.”
The 120-credit program qualifies graduates for the NBCOT exam and national certification, while also instilling the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field. As our Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, Edward Barreto, BA, COTA/L, emphasizes, “We are unwavering in our commitment to preparing exceptional occupational therapy professionals.”
Jeremy Gonzales, M. Ed., OTA/L, Capstone Coordinator, added: “I’m excited to help build a transformative program where students excel in both clinical practice and leadership.”
